Who has or has had (and played) Giant Step Pedals?

Post by Jules »

The Giant Step pedals are about as German, over the top pedals as you can imagine. You'd think that half of us Sonor nuts would have one just because it is the quintessential Sonor design.

For me, there are too many adjustments. I suffer from bad foot technique in part due to bad joints but also due to lack of focussed practice. I have a 600 series now that is probably the easiest to play that I have ever owned, and I have a spare 600. Fine tuning the GSP would occupy all my time, I think. I had them in the shop years ago, but can't remember if I had a personal one. I used one enough to know, that I prefer something simpler. I have had half a dozen of the Perfect Balance, but they never quite felt just right.

What is your experience with the Giant Step Series?

That's like the Axis pedals were, back in the day. Everything seemed adjustable. I tried one a couple of times, didn't like it much. But the guys who liked the things really liked them.

To each their own, I guess.

I found a reasonably priced used Giant Step Middle Pedal after I had built a middle pedal with 1st generation Tama Iron Cobra parts. The GS was smooth, but didn't have the feel and power of the Tama, so I sold it.

Had a double pedal briefly. Awesome pedal. Loved the feel, speed, and control. Didn't take long to dial in either. Sold it when I realized the hinge design wasn't going to work with my (mostly) barefoot, heel-down playing style.

Sold it and went back to my DW's...

I have both the giant step double and single and they are fantastic. I bought boh used, the single for less than 200 and the double for less than 300 (i foget exact prices)
Both when I received them had wear to the blue paint which showed a good amount of use, and i expected to need to clean service and maybe replace bearings.
Both have zero play and needed no adjustment, no bearing play, no cross bar play(on the double) and both are silent (I also have both set up as strap drive, which is as they came to me)
I have zero problems with the docking station and it makes it easy for me to swap from sigle to double in seconds.
The red plastic cam is also reversible, so there are two cam drive options (I dont think this is widely advertised or know, and i did not find out till 6 months after purchase)
Before buying my first used single I owned a PEARL ELIMINATOR DEMON DIRECT DRIVE, I was very happy with this pedal. I bought the giant step single because it was cheap and bought it thinking if would be fun to try but it would probably be a waste of money as i though it had no chance of being any better than the Pearl I was already very happy with.
After 6 months of miner tweaks i got the Giant step to feel as good as the Pearl, but when swaping back and forth it the coming months I saw that the pearl has slight play in the direct drive, and was heavier/slower to play. So the Giant step won out.

I would never have bought the giant steps at full RRP as i could not have tried one first (no local store) and its also very hard to get the feel of a pedal in 10 mins in a store.

"To much adjustability" seems a strange problem, you get the perfect balance which has no adjustability and if you dont like it you are stuck as it is.
