Who has or has had (and played) Giant Step Pedals?

Post by Jules »

The Giant Step pedals are about as German, over the top pedals as you can imagine. You'd think that half of us Sonor nuts would have one just because it is the quintessential Sonor design.

For me, there are too many adjustments. I suffer from bad foot technique in part due to bad joints but also due to lack of focussed practice. I have a 600 series now that is probably the easiest to play that I have ever owned, and I have a spare 600. Fine tuning the GSP would occupy all my time, I think. I had them in the shop years ago, but can't remember if I had a personal one. I used one enough to know, that I prefer something simpler. I have had half a dozen of the Perfect Balance, but they never quite felt just right.

What is your experience with the Giant Step Series?

That's like the Axis pedals were, back in the day. Everything seemed adjustable. I tried one a couple of times, didn't like it much. But the guys who liked the things really liked them.

To each their own, I guess.

I found a reasonably priced used Giant Step Middle Pedal after I had built a middle pedal with 1st generation Tama Iron Cobra parts. The GS was smooth, but didn't have the feel and power of the Tama, so I sold it.

Had a double pedal briefly. Awesome pedal. Loved the feel, speed, and control. Didn't take long to dial in either. Sold it when I realized the hinge design wasn't going to work with my (mostly) barefoot, heel-down playing style.

Sold it and went back to my DW's...
