Cases and "deeper than wide" floor toms?

Post by Scott_M »

What all are people using for their floor toms that are deeper than their diameter?

I''ve had a couple 80's/90's era kits come across my radar the past few months that have the floor toms that are deeper than their diameter (the 14x15, 15x16, and/or 16x17. Thinking ahead I figured I'd look for cases or decent bags for those sizes before buying one of those kits.

Seems that none of the case/bag manufacturers (SKB, Ahead, Humes and Berg, Protection Racket, Gator, etc) make anything that would fit a floor tom that's deeper than its diameter.

So, for those that have Sigs, Lites, Phonic Plus, Hilites, etc - what are you using for a case/bag for your floor toms?

Performer - Wine Red, 12/13/16/22 + 6.5x14 (D456)
Phonic - Oak, 13/14/16/22

My Hilites are in Hardcase cases. The 16x17" FT just fits in the 16 case, but only just with a little tiny bit of overlap between the lid and base. The 18x18FT fits in the 18 case fine, so I'd assume an 18x19" would fit just in the same way as the 16 case.

I had the local drum centre asking me for photos a few months back as a Sonor artist here has a 16x18(deep) floor tom and was wondering if it would fit in the 16 case - answer not without a sliver of the shell being visible.

Hardcases should do it... I've never tried deeper than wide, but I feel like my regular hardcases have a decent bit of run off left. In failing, I'm sure Hardcase could make you some or already have the product for the job.

Hardcase do make customs, I have one coming for my HLD588 (an altered 15" floor tom case in essence) but they take a while to arrive unless you're an artist.

Humes and Berg will do it upon request, but EVERY TIME I have ever discussed it with them they invert the dimension and tell me that it is a stock size even when I have told the SPECIFICALLY that the drum is longer than wide.

Thanks for the quick responses and recommendations for Hardcase - looks like they actually do make a "deep" floor tom case for the 16" and a square sized one for the 18", but don't do a 15" or a deep 14".
Hardcase Floor tom cases:

For 16" Floor Tom x 18" deep shell please use HN16B
For 18" Floor Tom x 18" deep shell please use HN18B

That said, I'm also curious if there's any other cases available that are "correctly sized" for the Sig, Lite, etc floor toms.

Sq2 - Med Beech, Rosewood finish - 10/12/14/16/18/22 + 6.5x14
Performer - Wine Red, 12/13/16/22 + 6.5x14 (D456)
Phonic - Oak, 13/14/16/22

Now I'm curious what they'd charge for an Enduro Pro for a 16x17 floor tom. The 16x16 retails at like $170-$175, which is the same ballpark as the Hardcase, and a little less than the Gator and SKB's...

I didn't realise they already offer an extra deep version - I can guarantee that a 'deep' 18x18 case would fit a 18x19 drum, because my normal vanilla 18" FT case already fits the 18x18 with maybe an inch of overlap.
