SQ2 - No bass drum tension rod options...

Post by Jules »

I have been playing in the configurator for a while. Getting the itch to get something new (which would be directly related to selling some gear).

A curious thing to me is that you don't get the options of slotted or square bass drum tension rods as are found (square) on the Prolite/SQ1's. I wonder why. I THINK I would prefer to use a key on the bass drum for less weight, mildly easier loading into a gig bag and potentially one 20 less rubber parts to deal with.

The knobs are really nice. They feel great and make it really easy to tune.

As a Sonor and specifically SQ2 newcomer, I’ve never given this much though. My current Pearl kit has square tension rods which is what I’m used to for the kick. I can see the convenience of the easy grip knobs, but at the same time, once I tension the kick drum heads, I don’t find myself re-tensioning that often. Just thinking out loud.

New to Sonor ‘25
AQ2 Stage Titanium Quartz 10/12/14/16/22
6.5 x 14 Steel Kompressor
SQ2 Heavy Beech African Marble ordered on 8/4/25
and the waiting begins....

Equivalent of ordering your new Mercedes with steel wheels? Lighter, cheaper and very practical, but altogether not becoming of a top tier product?

You make a good argument. If I were to actually order an SQ2 (not beyond the realm of possibility) I guess the idea of changing the rods out would depend on how much I planned to bag the drums up and gig with them.
