OPINION: What is Sonor's most OVER rated product?

Post by Jules »

It can be a series, a specific product such as snare drum, tom holder, bass drum pedal or whatever made by Sonor

The Danny Carey bronze snare drum.

I don't know what they were thinking with the plastic throw off. Replaced it on my S-classix snare with the metal version.

The Sonic Plus stands had plastic in bad areas. I am not a fan of plastic in critical parts.

The Danny Carey bronze snare drum.

I think all the cast bronze snares.

They all have a very high price of entry to the club, but a very specific sound, just like Tama "Terminator" The sound is hyped to biblical proportions.

I do have my own custom-shelled bronze HLD-582, so i have that sound.

Does sonor snares i've paid $200/$250 spend more time on my snare stand, yes........

We would all be happy to have found one under the christmas tree but would we all have loved the sound and decided this is our one snare forever!!!! no.......

Except the DC snare isn't a cast bronze snare, it's bronze sheet rolled and welded. From all accounts, not even that good a job of it either. You just get DC fans seeing it, seeing the word bronze and assuming they're buying what Danny actually uses. Far from the truth. They go for silly money for what they are.

Well, I'll be damned. After all these years, I didn't know that. I never wanted one or saw one in person for that matter. Funny how it was just assumed it was cast Bronze. I wonder how many people got one and weren't happy when they realized it is sheet metal not a casting. They must have been sworn to secrecy or something. Or maybe I wasn't paying attention at that time. Who knows?

It isn't even a particularly good rolled and welded made-in-Asia-somewhere shell from my understanding. I assume the original intent was to use a legend's name to put out something in a little more accessible space, very similar to Taylor Hawkins Gretsch snare which is quite cheap and therefore was achievable rather than quite an elitist purchase. But yes, I think the highly elevated prices of the DC snare are all from Tool fans thinking they're buying the snare Danny uses before understanding the true ins and outs of bronze snares. It's telling he never uses one with Tool - it's all VK or Sonor (or more recently the cast bronze snare Dunnett gifted to him.) There is one clip floating around of DC using his snare at a gig at the Baked Potato I think.

But those who've bought them and know about Sonor snares rate them very poorly. I've passed on a few at cheap prices - I should have bought them to make some money flipping them onto the unsuspecting.

I wonder if Sonor put a prototype together, sent it to Danny, he said "yeah, its ok" and then they just went ahead and sold some.

Once Jules gets that Danny interview for the channel, we will find out! (joke)

We'll certainly hit on that topic when/if I get an interview lined up with him.
