Plans for the future...

Post by Jules »

As you probably know, my entire Sonor rig is for sale. There are several factors involved in this, and none have anything to do with the gear itself. I may need to get my wrist operated on. I should have done it years ago, but the range of motion is worse than it has ever been. Luckily, I don't have the level of numbness and pain I did 25-30 years ago. But this is yet one more reason to back off of drumming for a while.

Going forward, I expect to see new offerings in Sonor snare drums, pedals and maybe hardware. Also, depending on the turnaround of the gear for sale, I MAY put an SQ2 on order SOON.

Other than the SQ2, it will likely be a Momentum Series Birch next time. California Burl would be the current choice, but I imagine that in the next 12-18 months there will be new veneer offerings.

Life has a funny way of unexpectedly changing our plans. Hope that you're able to get some pain relief and range of motion back sooner than later. Will look forward to the next kit you choose when the time comes.

I MAY be close to ordering the first piece of the next Sonor rig! I am going to keep it a very tight secret, if I do!!!

I've been there...just about 4 months ago actually. Ended up with foot surgery after a two-month wait, and then a 4-6 week recovery. It sucks, but I'm glad I did it of course. Quality of life is the most important thing to consider, and it SUCKS to live with daily pain. I may actually end up having surgery on the other foot next year, but for now it's not as bad as the first one was.

Good luck on your upcoming procedure Jules. I think the Momentum birch kit sounds like a great plan for you--if you've had a spiffy finish before, you won't really miss it. I don't think I would ever go that route again to be honest, but your mileage may vary of course. I guess the other reason would be to get the exact sizes you want, but even at that--birch is birch, and the Momentum shells are basically the same as you'll get with an SQ2 kit. There are other little bells & whistles of course, but wood vs wood...you're getting the same thing.

Don't wait any longer than you have to - I ended up having both of my shoulders done about 5 years apart. Should have done the 1st one many years earlier as it dramatically and negatively affected my playing ability and style for years before the surgery. Still have some minor issues from that one even 7 years later, but the differences in range of motion, flexibility, strength, endurance, and pain levels on a daily basis really are night and day.

i.e. - "So that's what NOT being in pain ALL the time feels like..."

As for the gear, Sonor keeps putting out some great stuff and you know what you like. Won't be hard to find something you'll really dig once all the dust settles.
