New shell set (?)

Post by Jules »

I am currently playing a Vintage Series shell set in 13/16/22, and have SQ1s in 13/16/18/22 that I am about to switch back to. I am looking to sell the Vintage set, and ultimately, will replace the SQ1'a with an updated color or series when something new comes out that I can't wait to grab!

For years, I have played on up and two down. My preferred configuration is 13/16/18/22, but I have also played several 20(22)/12/14/16 frequently.

After the interview with Gavin Harrison (here: https://youtu.be/qb43CofMBUo?si=irZJkbm_JWeuKFfS) I am rethinking my sizes and if I order an ala carte rig at some point I may seriously consider 12/15/18 instead of 13/16/18. Much more spread in frequencies. I certainly will go with shallower bass drums. My playing style seems to lend itself better to 14" depth on the bass drum, but I could potentially do something goofy like 15" just to kill the resale value even more than the odd intervals will already do (humor).

Nice Jules. 14 depth is nice, eh?

I find its easy to tune and the mic likes it, I always seem to have a flatter eq curve/have to do less to it i comparison to my other drums.

All the above. As a relatively heavy hitting drummer for most of my life, I never had concerns about bass drum depth. Or to be more accurate, I never really gave it a thought. It's only been in recent years that I have had an awareness that there was that much difference in when it came to bass drums. Playing a church, and recently only playing with a pianist and praise team, I have had to be really sensitive with my volume and dynamics. Luckily, I am not behind a drum shield and there is no sound reinforcement on the drums, so that puts all the responsibility on me to keep from over powering things. The 14" depth works well for me because even playing through really soft passages, the bass drum still has a good, full tone. The deeper bass drums required a certain amount of energy (for lack of better vocabulary without coffee, yet) before both heads got involved I guess you could say.

Rotating between the SQ1 and Vintage sets really opened my eyes to that. If I had never bought the Silver Glitter Vintage Series, I would have never known what a contrast there is.

My "ideal" kick depth is 15"...but I'd rather have 14" than 16". In reality though, it likely doesn't make much of a difference to the average person in a crowd at a show. And even less of a difference to the average chowder-head here at a typical bar gig in Wisconsin, lol...
