Designer Series squawks. Floor Tom Leg Brackets/Bass Drum Spurs

Post by Jules »

In all of the engineering done to bring the Designer Series to market, many felt like they were over-engineered, which was a common accusation for Sonor in the world of drums, anyway.

The bass drum spurs offered features never before or since seen, as did the floor tom leg/bracket design. The problem was/is, in time, many of them failed. The SQ2 series saw the return of several more traditional takes on drum building. The spurs/spur brackets, floor tom leg brackets, and even the holes in the shells for APS went back to more tradition sizing with a slight redesign of the APS system.

The Designer parts, being vastly different from anything they replaced or were replaced with do not offer the convenience of having interchangeable parts with other series, and factory replacement parts in almost every case are long gone.

So, for you Designer owners who have had people handing your gear that were overzealous on torquing everything as tight as they could force it...

What have you done to replace or make do with parts that have gone bad on your Designer drums? This information may be paramount for others in a bind, trying to make do with their favorite gear, or who are contemplating buying Designer drums.

I have a 2006 Designer Series set. The tightening knobs on the bass drum spurs were both stripped. The previous owner replaced them with some wing nuts from another brand. The threads match so it works well enough.

The rubber around the extendable portion of the bass drum legs are also missing. Not sure if they were torn off or if they were degraded and just fell.

Perhaps I will replace the parts if I come across them. Although, I am not aggressively looking.

Other than those two issues, everything is in good shape. I have a good stash tunesafes, aps rubbers and the rubber that goes around the other knobs.

Biggest (only?) Issue I had was with the floor tom brackets - the knurling on the floor tom legs wore down the "cradle" part and the leg ended up sitting too deep into the bracket to be able to be torqued enough to be kept stable. Had 3 of the 6 wear down like that, and I wasn't gigging that kit heavily either.

Seems the metal the cradle portion was made from could have been made from a harder metal (steel?) to resist that, and/or they could have made the floor tom legs with a less pronounced knurled surface so they didn't act like files...

Sq2 - Med Beech, Rosewood finish - 10/12/14/16/18/22 + 6.5x14
Performer - Wine Red, 12/13/16/22 + 6.5x14 (D456)
Phonic - Oak, 13/14/16/22
