Losing Momentum... when does a Sonor series get the ax?

Post by Jules »

I know this is subject to debate and some series may have overstayed their welcome in the proverbial catalog, while others were replaced by upgraded models, etc.

An example of the latter would obviously be Designer Series. SQ2 was an updated in both product, and ability to configure such products.

Looking back over the years, which series of Sonor drums do you feel stayed in production too long, or didn't get to run their full course?

As to the current catalog, even though Vintage Series is nearing 11 years in production, they maintain a very strong mainstay of many Sonor Artists and consumers. I would HOPE that in a few more years they would update the line with all new finishes, while really leaving everything else as is. That said, I don't necessarily represent the core group of Sonor owners. But, I could certainly get excited about a new rig in a few years. I tend to go through gear somewhat frequently and unless I get an SQ2, there is nowhere else to go, unless I want to go with a cannon sized Momentum bass drum, which really isn't my thing these days.

I think they cut off the Prolite too early.

I found it interesting that they quit bring them into the US other than the snares some time before discontinuing them. Surely it had to have been a sales issue. Maybe in competition with SQ1 and Vintage the ProLite just didn't perform well in the States and the storage space and money was better tied up in the other things.

I'm biased but it always seemed like the Hilites were short lived for how great the drums are? I was a kid at the time so oblivious to such things, but did they just not sell?

That question is worthy of its own topic and deep dive.

I bought a used good conditon 22, 10, 12, 16ft Hilite kit in the early 2000's for $800. It was ok, but to me, the sound lacked the typical Sonor mojo and wasn't what I expected. I traded it plus $1000 for the same configuration in Rosewood Sonorlites about 3 years later. I then pieced together a Frankenstein/Orphan kit with a 22 Delite BD and 8, 10, 12, 14ft Designer Maple Lights and an SQ2 Maple Light 16ft and it was head and shoulders above the Hilites. I've heard others describe Maple Light Designers as "very special" sounding and I agree. I think Hilites went away because Designers sounded better and had so many new features.

Scandi Birch Sonorlites 22, 20, 10, 12, 14, 16
Impala Lacquer BumWrap Designer Orphans 22, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
African Marble Beech SQ2 22, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
Rosewood Vintage Series 22, 10, 13, 16
LD 547x and 6.5 x 14 Vintage Series

Is it? I'm all ears!

See I personally find the mojo of the Hilites is their thicker shell, and they're so warm to listen to. I've heard Delites being played but never played them, and I have played Prolites (briefly) and appreciate how pure the tone is, but find them a bit 'thin'? Not based on extensive experience obviously...

I liked the Hilites at higher Jazz tunings (I used them with a big band), but much prefer the Designer Maple Light toms for rock and fusion.

As a Sonor latecomer, I’m jealous of you all as I’ve never experienced any of the above mentioned kits ;)

AQ2 Stage Titanium Quartz 10/12/14/16/22
6 x 14 ProLite Snow Tiger
6.5 x 14 Brass Kompressor
SQ2 Heavy Beech African Marble ordered on 8/4/25 - ETA May 2026.

Designer basically replaced them as the flagship maple set. (and stopped them from having to offer hilite with RIMS, as they now made their own suspension system)

Maybe also the exclusive finish had started to cause issues by then, and instead of just dropping the exclusive finish, they dropped the whole line.
