Muffling... do you use any, how much and what do you use?

Lots of options.

Muffling... do you use any, how much and what do you use?

Post by Jules »

I generally don't muffle my toms at all where I play now. Big room and no close-micing. But several years ago I was miced up and had to 'tone down' the toms a little. I tried to use 2 M80's on a floor tom and got this vibration.

I ended up with drum dots, but I am not a big fan of those. I do use an M80 on the snare, but only partially spread.

Thanks for coming!

It depends on the style I'm playing - not much for Jazz, more for Rock. For snares, I have a variety of muffle ring widths from 1/2 - 3 inches cut from old heads. I use the clip-on mufflers on my Lite 10, 12, 14ft, and 16ft with my 70's & 80's band as everything is close miced. I use Drum Dots cut in half and/or fourths on the toms of my other kits.
