Buying and selling inexpensive used items...

Post by Jules »

I saw a post on one of the Facebook pages a few days ago where someone was looking to buy a used great/mint condition Sonor 4000 series Double Tom Stand. I, personally am one of those people that strongly to buy something brand new. That is certainly the case with the difference between new and used pricing is negligible.

As a buyer, this guy wasn't out of line in his request. That's not my argument at all. Actually, I should paint this picture with more broad strokes, since it is meant more generally than specifically to this potential transaction. The potential buyer hoped to find a like new condition stand at a very not new price. And, the right person just might hook him up. It isn't out of the question that someone could be sitting on one they don't need and would be glad to help a person in need.

I reached out, having two that I don't expect to use again, one of which never got used. When he responded, I was quick to point out that a brand new one is only $149 with free shipping. I offered mine up for $100 plus shipping, but reiterated that there would be a minimal gap between mine and a new one once shipping charges were added. So, he opted not to move forward, which I thought was the best decision for him and is what I made such a strong point about the new ones not being all that expensive.

Here is a subjective question that is sure to draw a variety of opinions; for current production, in stock items, particularly the lower end gear, at what point do you see buying used being viable over buying new? Obviously, the entire dynamic changes when you are able to make such transactions locally and shipping isn't involved.

All opinions and points of view are welcome.
