Sonor 14x4 Bronze Piccolo 1990 Brass

Post by Jules »

Where do you start? Why are all the tension rods in the same lugs? Seems like they would bottom out. Excellent condition? Seriously???

Also, I am not an expert on these snare drums, but I wonder why some of Sonor's really high end brass drums weren't seamless like the Ferro-Manganese. That machine is reportedly in Asia turning out brass bells for horns, why not expensive brass snare drums. The machine was still in use in 1990 at the Sonor factory. Is that the correct bearing edge and weld for Sonor?

The first thing you have to identify is which model is it.

All the Signature drums are cast bronze.

All the Symphony models are rolled and welded brass. The inside of the Symphony models and the SClass brass look exactly the same and the shell thickness is the same.

That’s the 1404SY so it’s rolled and welded with a bronze lacquer.

What were the prices of the S Class and what hardware was on them during that time? I am having trouble finding a pricelist that will open. And back then $1200 was alot of money for a snare drum. I think the D-500 Reissue in 1993 was either $575 or $675.

The Symphony and SClass brass both offered in 1997 for comparison

I owned that era of S Class. I bought a set in 1998 and had a Steel Shell 14X5 as a back up to my D 500 and Designer. The Symphony is more than double the price of the S Class.

Going back to the Reverb listing, though. What day of the week is THAT excellent condition. and it has some aftermarket stuff in it.

I’m thinking the SClass was B stock from the symphony run. Why would they have 2 different sources for a brass shell? Cheaper hardware for sure than the SY. I had one and still have some SClass Pro shells laying around.
