Question about sonor phonic snare wire mechanism

Post by Ba-dum-tsss »

I have recently bought a used 14x8 Sonor Phonic snare (beech shell). I know that Phonic snares were designed for longer snare wires (a-la supersensitive), but this one came with regular 14" snare wires. The drum still sounds pretty awesome and I'm getting enough snare wire response for my needs, but I'm curious how big a difference it would make to install the longer wires as it was intended.

Does anyone have any idea which currently available snare wires would fit the original sonor phonic?

Check with your Sonor dealer - Sonor's still making the extended wires for their MP-1412-X and MP-1412-MX marching snares. Looks like it's the same setup as the extended wire setup on the old Phonic/Lite snares.

A cheaper and more readily available option is 20 strand Pearl free floating wires model SO25. The total length is about 15 3/4" with the wires 14 7/8" and they fit perfectly with the extended Throw-off II strainer and butt. I have them on my Sonorlite snare.
