Where is the line between heavy duty and over engineering?

Post by Jules »

Over the years, Sonor has been accused of over engineering in some regards. While maybe some of the critique comes from people who don't really "get it" with Sonor, I think there is some credibility to some of it. Cymbal stands were pretty over the top, in my opinion. If you use a 5 way adapter to mount 5 pieces of gear to a cymbal or tom stand, then the chunkiness of the design and build certainly is justifiable. So, there are admittedly some gray areas, or at least some areas where the weight and mass of a stand plays a part in its usefulness.

One thing I will toss out there, justto get the conversation going, it the Signature/Phonic Plus bass drum spur brackets. Was there a failure point at which the tried and true Phonic/Lite/HiLite, etc. bracket wouldn't be suitable? Bad pics, but just for comparison...

Was this an answer to a known or potential problem, or just one more step to be over the top with the Signature series?

This may be germane to the topic but recently had someone comment on a pic I posted of my Kompressor, asking how many people I had help me lift it. He’s production manager of a local venue so he’s seen 1000s of bands load in their gear. Does Sonor have the reputation of making heavy snares?

AQ2 Stage Titanium Quartz 10/12/14/16/22
6 x 14 ProLite Snow Tiger
6.5 x 14 Brass Kompressor
SQ2 Heavy Beech African Marble ordered on 8/4/25 - ETA May 2026.
