Sonor spotting... Huey Lewis & the News

Post by tcbetka »

THIS is the tour I met them on, and I believe that's the same kit. Looking at it again now, the drums don't look like such a big deal. But keep in mind that at the time, you just didn't see Sonor drums in person in northern Wisconsin. It was Slingerland, Ludwig, Pearl and (the new kid at the time) Tama. In fact my friend and I were both double-kick players at the time, and I had just gotten a HUGE Tama "Superstar Mega" kit--10, 12, 13, 14, 15 concert toms, 16ft & 18ft and double 24" kicks. But I remember feeling how massively powerful Bill Gibson was on that kit, and both my friend and I were blown away by the guy. And I remember he loved talking about the kit--but I don't recall the details about it. Looks like maybe 12, 13, 16ft, 18ft?

This was not the exact gig I was at--we were probably at one of the first shows on the tour, because they were playing in a 200-seat club in Wausau Wisconsin. It was literally a "regular bar gig" at the local sports bar back in the day, lol. In fact I think I played that place in a rock band only 4-5 years later. The door to the backstage area opened up into the back area outside the bar, and was like 8-10 feet from the stage. So we all stood out there and BS'd after sound check. Those guys could not have been nicer--including Huey himself. I remember us three drummers (me, my friend whose band was opening for them, and Bill Gibson) standing in a small group talking drums, and then Huey walks up and starts maligning drummers. It was a great hang! And hat band was TIGHT though. Wow...they were great. Very possibly the best live band I've ever seen in person...at least from the side of the stage.

Anyway, here's a video of their show back then. I think the show I saw them at was maybe in 1982 or 1983--the bar isn't there anymore, but Googling around shows me a Facebook thread where people were talking about seeing them there in the summer of 1983. So maybe it was the year after this show in the video--but I do remember that the Sonor kit he was playing was black.

Heh... AI helped me with this:

Yes, Huey Lewis and the News performed a show in Wausau, Wisconsin, in 1983. The concert took place at the Shang-ri-la Bar (also known as the Silver Dollar Cowboy Bar). The band had been booked when they only had one hit song, but by the time the concert date arrived, their album Sports had been released and they had multiple hits. They honored their original commitment to play the small venue, a gesture that was widely respected by the venue owners and attendees. Attendees from that show have confirmed being present at the "great show" which occurred in 1983.

Pretty wild--and it makes it even MORE amazing to me, because these guys were the most down-to-earth people you could hope to meet. It did not seem like a big deal atmosphere to me, by any means. I mean, we know they were an incredible band--but this was before MTV was widely available in these parts. Cable TV was not all very common around here back then--at least not around my neighborhood. My friend had it when I was in High School, but they lived in town and I wasn't over there to watch TV much.

Love Bill's playing with the Band. Were these Phonic's? (hard for me to see them)

I saw Bill playing at a Yamaha event in Nashville several months back. He was killing it.

He really is a GREAT drummer. He's not super flashy--I remember he told us back then "That's not my style" when we asked him about two kick drums. He was wayyyy past right on being a groove-oriented guy!

It is nice to see a reminder of a day when MTV actually supported good MUSIC.

Of interest to me is the use of a single mic over/between the toms and another single mic over/between the two floor toms. On top of that, they are RE20 which are cardioid mics. Seems like a half-assed set up for a major production, but it also may have been standard operating procedure at the time. Not sure. I know I wouldn't want MY gear mic'd up like that even in a club gig.

They were tight. I only recognized a couple of songs, but they did a great job.
