WANTED: Drummer with Original HLD590 AND 150th Anniversary HLD590. Please PM Jules if you have both.
New series is here: Momentum! Beech, Birch and Maple shell options!
Beech, Birch and Maple shell options!
I thought I saw that somewhere, but can't to find it again now. I hate Instagram with a passion though, so maybe I'm just not searching right. At some point I would think it has to be on YouTube, right? Would make sense to me anyway...

These are 2 up 1 down, instead of 1 up 1 down. I wonder if that is direct response to what else is going on in the market, or if people didn't like having to find an add on tom when ordering a pre-pack.

Wondering if anyone may know if the Momentum snare drums are comparable to an SQ2 drum?
I'm looking at the cost comparison and if these new snares are on-par in sound and build quality to an SQ2 for less money (current Reverb listing average 1400-1700 USD) then a new Momentum may be my next wood shell snare drum.

The lugs wouldn't have APS on the Momentum, but since you are talking mounts, I don't personally see that as a negative when it comes to a snare drum. If you are happy with triple flange hoops, I would surmise (someone will correct me if I am forgetting something) that the Momentum would be on par with a similarly sized SQ2 in a medium shell.

Just did a quick build in the SQ2 configurator for a 14x6.5 with triple flange hoops, square rods, and white semi-gloss:
Birch - $974
Beech - $1007 USD.
Maple - $1080
Reverb shows the Momentum 14x6.5's going for $950-$970, regardless of shell...
Best I can tell, it's the exact same specs, hardware, etc as the SQ2's, just limited size/color/shell/hoop options.

Yeah the configurator price is good compared to the Reverb prices for new SQ2 snares. I'm not sure what that's about. I personally don't want to wait a year or more for a drum and maybe that's why people are asking such high prices for one that's available to get today? I'm not sure.. I don't want to derail this thread.
I'm mainly interested in sound and build quality and hopefully I'll get to check the new one's out at a shop in the near future.

I love Sonor drums but Sonor can be so annoying at times. They almost had it here. The color choices stink yet again. I want real colors that people like. African marble etc. Second, the bass drum and tom sizes are weird. Just give me standard sizes. Having a 22x17.2.5 as the only size is a mistake. I want a 12x8 tom-tom etc. They are charging a lot of money for a compromised product. They tried to go for two things. Sell a new line of drums and don’t hurt the sq2 line. They won’t hurt the sq2 line but I don’t see these sell well past the beginning when collectors buy them.
There is nothing new on this new series. No new hardware etc., just recycled parts out of the parts bin.
They also need to improve the sq2 series as the mounting hardware is outdated. It’s new management, so there will be growing pains as they learn the drum market. They will have to invest in new hardware and innovations or they will fall further behind. The tama star series is around this price range and offers a lot more features for the money. I am disappointed because they really didn’t do much here. The vintage and sq1 series sold well. This will not only opinion.
Chris
Well it is Sonor we're talking about here, so odd(ish) sizes it is...
To be fair though, I don't think a person would be able to hear a difference in such subtle depth deltas. I mean, you have an argument about a 17.25" deep kick shell, but as to the tom depth...I don't know how muuch of a difference those would make. Just my 2 cents .

I have this bad feeling that this series may end up sitting in a warehouse waiting for people to buy them. I don’t see the enthusiasm from me or the rest of the Sonor faithful. Those 150th super expensive vintage series kits will be siting in their warehouse for years. They are ugly. Give us was we want Sonor. The new flagship series to replace sq2.
