From Sonor.com:

🥁 SONOR MOMENTUM – 2025: A DEFINING MOMENT 🥁
150 Years of Craftsmanship • Innovation • Evolution

A Milestone Year

2025 sets an important milestone in SONOR’s 150-year history.
It’s a year dedicated to our legacy, past and tradition — but also a time to look towards innovation, evolution, and new creative horizons.
Because innovation isn’t just part of our story — it’s part of our DNA.

Introducing: The MOMENTUM Series

In 2025, we proudly introduce our brand-new Made in Germany drum line: MOMENTUM.
This series brings together the best of our German-made instruments — merging proven shell construction, signature materials, and legendary hardware with:
Fresh veneers
Timeless wraps
Modern matte lacquers

Built on 150 years of craftsmanship and developed with an eye on today’s drummer, MOMENTUM defines the next chapter of SONOR’s serially produced German drums.

Where Tradition Meets Progress

MOMENTUM isn’t just a product launch – it’s a statement.
A bridge between heritage and innovation.

Available in Maple, Birch, or Beech, each shell features SONOR’s renowned 9-ply (6mm) construction for consistent tone, projection, and response.

Offered in your choice of:
Semi-gloss veneer
Matte lacquer
Delmar wrap

Every detail — visual and acoustic — designed for excellence.

Finishes

Four premium finishes unite SONOR’s classics with new inspiration:

🎨 Red Pearl (wrap)
🎨 Satin Pure White (matte lacquer)
🎨 GT Black (matte lacquer)
🎨 California Burl (semi-gloss veneer)a brand-new finish debuting exclusively with MOMENTUM!

Hardware & Features

MOMENTUM incorporates SONOR’s most trusted and innovative hardware:

ProLite T.A.R. Tom Mounts
Advanced Sound Sustainer System (from the SQ1 series) on floor toms

These proven systems deliver superior tone isolation, resonance, and stability — the hallmarks of SONOR design.

Shell Construction

Every drum in the MOMENTUM series uses SONOR’s 9-ply, 6mm medium shell construction.
Renowned for its sonic versatility, rich tone, and projection, this shell performs effortlessly across all playing styles — from delicate brushwork to thunderous backbeats.

Choose Your Sound

Each MOMENTUM kit is available in three distinct shell materials, each with its own voice:

🥁 German Beech – The classic SONOR tone: full, warm, and dynamically balanced with exceptional projection.
🥁 Scandinavian Birch – Sharp and focused with clear low and high frequencies, and smooth, balanced mids.
🥁 North American Maple – Mellow, warm, and balanced. Strong low end with a smooth mix of mids and highs.

Because all shell types share the same sizes and finishes, you can mix and match woods to build your perfect sound concept — one cohesive voice or a custom blend of tonal personalities.

A New Chapter Begins

Built on history. Designed for the future.
MOMENTUM is more than a drum series — it’s a statement of what SONOR stands for.

For us, it was about time.
Now, it’s your turn.

It's an interesting product. In many ways it's doing the SQ2 heavy lifting in a cheaper suit - a huge amount of people who order SQ2 will be ordering medium something shells. We finally get to see what a Vintage Series is really all about - how close is a beech Momentum when they're the same shells and the only difference is the edges and the lugs?

They appear to be the drums everyone has asked for or been buying...

The initial reception this morning from my non-Sonor geek friends though, is very lukewarm. They think the finishes are boring, they think the lack of veneers over even Prolite is selling one of Sonor's main selling points (fancy veneers) down the river. They think the name implies cheapness. They think the finishes look pretty average...

How a German made beech/maple/birch kit can ever be average I don't know, but the initial feeling is only OK rather than total want...

Personally, I wanna hear them. Let's have them up against a Vintage Series and a Lite or an SQ1 and a Prolite or Hilite and hear the differences.

The shell depths increasing at even amounts per tom diameter is a cool idea - no idea if it's legit or hokum though.

I was a little perplexed at why they offer white in SQ1 when it was nearing its end. It was a test run for this, apparently.

They have a little something for everyone, here. PLUS, there is all sorts of upward mobility on new finishes, and I am sure we will see some in coming years. The California Burl works for me, but not to the point of taking a hit on my Vintage series. I will play those a while and maybe in the next couple of year a new Momentum finish will release that I have to have!

For sure, Dave. With what's offered on SQ1, Prolite, Vintage series and Momentum, which offers the biggest spread of options in one series, seems like it would narrow SQ2 sales. Guess if you're dead set on sizes & wood/shell combo that isn't accessed through an existing series, it's the only choice. ie. a 22x15 vintage shell, birch bass drum. Maybe some will compromise in the eye of (potentially) less cost. Like..... get the 22x15.25" Momentum bass drum in Birch which medium (6mm instead of 6mm +2mm re rings on vintage shell accessed through SQ2) against the prior example.

Are the shells scandinavian birch/euro birch I wonder (and their maple and beech counterparts...)?

I think its the edges that make the VS largely sound the way it does.

Maybe DCP will get something lined up for this in a controlled environment, which would be great!

The literature says Scandinavian Birch. Basically, these are SQ2 Medium shells.

No issue with the shells, sizes, lugs , hoops, or mounting hardware, I'm 100% sure they will sound great, just like an SQ2. Just not for me due to my preference for high gloss lacquer finishes (sparkle or veneer) and requirement for a bass drum mount (this can be added of course).

I guess I'll have to stick to my 3 SQ2 kits (one on order).

Any word on pricing? If it's similar to SQ1 it would be quite a deal for those who like the finishes.

Are these going to be stocked or custom order only? I would think that so many SKUs would add to the cost.

Yeah, I hate to say I told you so, but...

Not a "bad" deal though I think, because now a person who is a fan of the thinner shells has an alternative to a pricey SQ2 kit. I'm excited!
