These are already great drums and the 150th badge lets me show off my excitement for Sonor history

I think the 150th badge will make this drum collectible in the future

They should have upgraded to Die Cast (Artist or Hella) hoops, making the 150th more appealing

They should have upgraded to the Dual Glide system for the 150th anniversary

Post by Jules »

Sonor has these Anniversary Edition drums available, directly based on the catalog model; but with 150th Anniversary badges. Please let us know your thoughts...

I'm not a fan of 'regular' steel snares at all. Ferromanganese all the way, or something a bit different like the Steve Smith cast or a Keplinger.

But more in line with the poll itself, I don't think the badge is going to make any difference to values longer term, in much the same way Centennial badges don't on Phonics. So for me, the only reason to buy this is if I was going to buy one anyway, and then you might as well have a 150th version.

You bring up a good point on the Centennial badges. I currently play a Kompressor Steel 14X6.5, while I work up the courage, or whatever it is to pull this Artist Bronze out and play it. This Kompressor has a very bright sound and it is working good for me. I had the Brass model just over a year ago, and like it even better, but I have no need to get another one while this Artist Bronze is waiting on me!

There's no Kompressor in my future as I have steel covered with my D-506 with Hellas and aluminum is covered with a $350 "Acrophonic" build: a 6.5x14 Click seamless shell, 8 Ludwig Imperial Lugs, a P-88 strainer and butt, and blue/olive badge. i did give some thought to a 8x14 Kompressor Aluminum before I built it, but it would've been almost double the price. I've had a couple of nice brass drums in the past: A 6x14 Sonor Signature/Symphony with Hellas and more recently an 6.5x14 A&F Raw Brass, but sold both. I'm good for metal snares with one steel and one aluminum. I did a recording project a couple of months ago where I went for a 70's sound with the aluminum. The engineer called me in the control room after the first take and said "That snare sound is the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac Rumors, and the first 3 tom Petty albums all in one!"

Scandi Birch Sonorlites 22, 20, 10, 12, 14, 16
Impala Lacquer BumWrap Designer Orphans 22, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
African Marble Beech SQ2 22, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
Rosewood Vintage Series 22, 10, 13, 16
LD 547x, D-506, 6.5 x 14 Vintage

I have always wanted a Alu snare and have considered an vintage acrolite, but wanted to stay Sonor. Then along came the Kompressor, but being a collector of the older drums the new range has never quite excited me enough to hand over my money (any since that launched have spends that money on a designer snare instead)
Sonor could have twisted my arm into a purchase if they have put a 150th bade on the Alu model, (I actually emailed them to ask if such a thing would exist and got no reply)
I think there are two option you have missed out from the poll.

1: Would you have bought a 150th kompressor if it had been in one of the other shell materials.

2: Does the 150th Kompressor not being for sale in your country and therefore incurring international shipping and taxes significantly influence your purchase.

Please correct me on 2, am i correct in saying this drum is only for sale in the USA and singapore?

I'm not paying shipping and import taxes for European drums companies drum when in europe!

I think Sonor should have made a 150 bronze sheet metal Kompressors for the anniversary

I think the phonic centennial/phonic and the kompressor/ 150th compressor have two things in common (correct me if i am off on the phonic spec)

But neither the centennial or the 150th are any different to the standard model in anything other than badge. Its hard enough to find a good phonic set as it, that i dont think other that us real nerds people really know what the centennials are, and with it being nothing more than a badge people dont see much extra value in it.

I know its expensive to do to do small batch runs of items to make a special edition "special" but Sonor really arnt going any deeper than making some badges.
Imagine if as in my other reply they had make 150 sheet bronze 150th koppressors they really would be "special" then, i'm sure the manufacturers of the steel and aluminum shell could have done that fairly easily

Keep your eyes peeled...

On the sheet bronze idea - could be great. I have a 14x5" Bronze Beauty and the darker tone of it is lovely. On the flip side we know the last time Sonor did a sheet bronze snare (the Danny Carey signature) it wasn't exactly a great drum...

Having owned one and trying everything including Hellas

The DC has my vote the absolute worst high end snare Sonor ever made

My only sadness about those is I passed up buying two of them for about $400 (NZD) each and now people ask like 10 times that for them...
