What Sonor hardware improvements would you like to see?

Post by Jules »

While playing Gretsch drums for a spell, I was using Yamaha hardware, and I had a ton of it in varying series. The Crosstown series became my go-to, in time. But, I am going to start a different topic for that.

My favorite thing about the Yamaha 800 series hardware was that you could have three items on a single stand without the use of a multi clamp.

I am not a fan of multi-clamps in my own rig. I am not critical of others that use them, but for myself, they look like an afterthought and in operation, I am not thrilled with the extra ways that a multi-clamp maybe become detached in use. When using the Yamaha 800 series, I would mounts 2 cymbals and a tom, to two cymbals and auxiliary percussion or whatever. Quick set up (and Yamaha memory locks are easy to get ahold of) solid as a rock.

In the "Link Era" hardware, you could add a bracket or adapter to make a double Stand a triple, or even a 5 way. But I can't help but wonder why they haven't designed a 3 way standard block for the 600 series/basic arm system.

Some other things I think are worthy of a look is the fact that so many of their hardware items don't come with memory locks, and it is so hard to find them. SonorSam is the one guy that you can pretty much count on to have these things.

Lastly, and this isn't a design issue, but so many items in the 600 series and basic arm system are commonly out of stock. I usually invest the money to cut down on extraneous weight and hardware mass, but the pieces I need are and have been out of stock for quite a while. Almost, like it is an afterthought.

Here are the items I would like to replace the boom arms in my hardware:

I think they could offer a DCS with a pair of these and sell a ton of them, since the booms can take up so much space, but it is discontinued:

I know that lots of people are dissatisfied with the Sonor pedals. I finally have my 600 series pedal fine tuned where I am able to play it pretty effortlessly. But, that is not a sentiment echoed by many. I have a sneaking suspicion that Sonor is working to step it up in the hardware/pedal areas which may be why there isn't much of an apparent effort to stock the items that have been in the catalog for so long.

I have to confess, other than some Signature Series hardware, and a few 600 series bits, the majority of my hardware is Pearl. It's generally in stock in NZ, it's a third to a quarter of the price and particularly their rack system and the options that go with it are second to none.

But... The chrome isn't great and I'm increasingly finding myself a big fan of the wingnut and locking nut system on cymbal stands on Sonor gear. I'm starting to want to switch over more stuff to Sonor hardware, I think.

Stuff I'd love to see though? The pull out and rotate 90 degrees spurs on Signature Series hardware are magnificent. The boom arms you mention above are awesome. I'd still like to see a longer-than-standard boom than the current 600 series has, maybe as an option available to order. The basket adjustment to suit different diameter snares on Pearl 1030 stands is excellent. The Yamaha triple castings are great. Longer floor tom legs available with memory locks. They need to do a great remote hi-hat.

And my personal pet niggle - fit rubber protection inside the bass drum claws on all series. If the AQ series has it, why they hell does the Vintage Series not have it?
