Sonor drum heads vs. Remo

Post by Jules »

If you bought drums that came with Sonor drumheads during the seemingly short run of them, what did you think of them compared to the standard Remo heads used before and since? I think they had stopped production prior to the first incarnation of the S Class series, which was my first new German made set, but I am not too sure on that.

I know Sonor made heads, but I was of the impression that they were aftermarket and didn't come on new drums. The catalogs of the 70's and 80's show Remo heads on the drums.

I think they made heads starting in the late 80's or early 90's and only for a few years. That's definitely the Sonor head logo (at the bottom) and it says made in Germany. I know I remember seeing them on a buddy's Force 2000, and I THOUGHT they were on my '98 S Class, but I may be remembering wrong.

My father's Hilite came with them in 1991, can't comment on what they're like as when I took delivery of it in NZ in 2022, despite some of them still being present, they were obviously pretty worn out.

I have kept them though, no idea why - sentimentality maybe.

I've noticed there's a few Sonor geeks who seem to want to only use these heads and seek out new old stock of them.
