Modern vs Vintage Sonor: Are We Chasing the Right Thing?

Post by Jules »

This is a question that ChatGPT came up with as a possible Coffee with Jules topics, and I think it is totally relevant.

EDIT: The use of the term "Vintage" was rather vague. Trying to find a proper/relevant definition is just as bad.

Instead of trying to nail down a specific time period, I think that anything out of production for a spell and that is favored over current models is relevant.

I am not a vintage drum guy, whatsoever. I mean, age of the drum doesn't mean a lot to me...if it sounds great, then I don't care how old it is. So if a "modern" kit blows me away, then there you go.

Never cared for 'vintage.' Vintage usually means rounded bearing edges, removing strong bright attack and replacing it with what I consider a muddy sound. To each their own, but 45 degree bearing edges for me for that modern sound.

How are we defining vintage? My Scandi Birch Lites are 42 years old which most people would consider vintage, yet they have 45 degree edges and sound very modern. ;)

I dont think anything Sonor made falls into the typical "vintage" umbrella till you get back to the teardrop era. The whole industry transferred to what we now consider a standard modern spec in the 70/80's
