Noise Cancelling Headphones/Earbuds for practice...

Post by Jules »

I was using JBL Tour Pro + True Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds - Black to practice on the drums with. I could kill the majority of the ambient volume from the drums which allowed me to keep the music volume within a level that you could listen to for extended periods without pain or ear fatigue. They worked really well.

These particular ones are about to be passed down to my daughter since I no longer need them, and my ear holes seem to be growing over (the ear pieces are somehow too large) and she has all my extra earpieces. I will look for something new when the time comes to start building a new rig mid-2026.

I also had a full sized set of headphones: Bose Headphones 700, Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Over-Ear Wireless Headphones, but these were quirky in that loud snare hits would somehow affect the noise cancelling system and would cause a click of sorts. Not catastrophic; but annoying. Plus, these are heavier and more cumbersome.

These items are dated, do any of you recommend other options currently on the market?

I find my AirPods Pro (2nd gen) do an "ok" job with that. Not terribly great for isolation/hearing protection with the factory tips, but the noise reduction does help. Not near as good as proper isolating headphones or IEMs, but when you think about it, that's not what noise-cancelling headphones/earbuds are primarily designed for.

An alternate suggestion:

I snagged an Eve Play for like $100 on sale a couple months back (normally like $150-165). Connected that to my mixer and I can now easily stream music from my phone out through the board and into my Shure IEMs for practicing. It just connects right up to my phone/tablet/laptop like connecting to any other Bluetooth speaker.

So far it's been well worth the investment for what I've needed it for. Haven't tried it at a gig or anything (and likely won't), so not sure how well it would work in that environment, but for my home/practice space setup it's been awesome.
