SQ2 Bass Drum Depth

Post by Jeremy Bender »

While visiting DCP in NH a conversation about Sonor drums came up and one of the things we discussed were drum sizes. It was mentioned that 15" may be the ideal depth on a 22" bass drum. I'm also inclined to think that would be true for both 22 & 24"

Thoughts on your favorite depth? What dimensions of bass drum did you order and would you get a different size if you could order your SQ2 kit again?

I just ordered my SQ2 in August and chose 22x16 for the kick. I’ve never played on anything shallower than 16” but am intrigued by the shallower sizes.

My SQ2 BD is a heavy beech 22x18 as I tried to dupicate a Signature that I used to have. It sounds great, both miced and without, but if I could do over, I'd order it 16" deep, but no shallower. My 22 Lite is 17 deep as is the 22 Delite with my Frankenstein/Orphans Designer kit. The only 22x14 I have is the Vintage Series I bought this past summer and it's the first one I've owned since '79. My Lite 20 is 16 deep.

Scandi Birch Sonorlites 22, 20, 10, 12, 14, 16
Impala Lacquer BumWrap Designer Orphans 22, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
African Marble Beech SQ2 22, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
Rosewood Vintage Series 22, 10, 13, 16
LD 547x, D-506, 6.5 x 14 Vintage

It's hard to say the ideal. I've got, in 22", 2x 22x18's, a 22x17 and 22x14. I really do feel it does make a difference. They can sound equally great, but the deeper vs shallow does have a little different flavour. Overall, I do feel I have to work less on a shallow drum... it feels an easier setup/dial in.

Never played a 15 depth 22. 16 depth 22 SQ2 I have played, and was a very nice drum too.

I should add to my above, I think if I didn't know the drums specifically and was blind folded, I struggle to tell between an 17 and an 18" depth.

Pretty sure I've come across a YouTube video comparing bass drum depths. Even with headphones on it was hard to differentiate between 1 inch differences. I'm sure being in the room you might better hear that. Also, as a player, you would also feel the difference between depths.

22x16 on the thin SQ2 birch and 17.5 on the Prolite. I prefer the 22x16 but the 22x17.5 does bring some boom to the mix.
